Cod Liver Oil and Weight Loss

by Jon (Singapore)

I am 36 years old male, 5’6″ and used to weigh 172 lbs. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides. After 3 months of taking cod liver oil soft gels, I lost 22 lbs. I took 4 small soft gels of cod liver oil per day. It’s been a month since I stopped taking this because of my weight loss. I don’t feel anything bad inside me, though. Should I still be alarmed?

Reply: Cod liver oil soft gels provide the essential fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as well as smaller amounts of vitamin A and vitamin D.

EPA and DHA are omega 3 fatty acids that help your body produce special chemicals that affect your blood pressure, hormones, body temperature, inflammation, immune response and mood. Your body can’t produce these fatty acids very efficiently so you need to get them from your diet.

Using a high quality omega 3 supplement, such as cod liver oil or fish oils is an effective way to supplement your diet with these important fats.

There are many factors that may cause weight loss in individuals, such as metabolic changes, dietary factors, medications or illness.

Some research actually indicates that fish oils may cause weight loss.

It’s beyond this forum to provide any medical advice regarding health conditions and its recommended you consult your doctor for an accurate diagnosis.
