What is Garden of Life Coconut oil and is it a real virgin coconut oil?
Garden of Life coconut oil is a popular product found in many health food stores.
Garden Of Life claims their coconut oil is made from the meat of fresh, organically-grown coconuts.
They market the product as 100% vegetarian, non-GMO, not hydrogenated, refined, deodorized or bleached.
The oil is made by shredding the fresh coconut meat and cold-pressing it to produce coconut milk.
The next step is they ferment the milk and they claim to use only low heat which produces the coconut oil.
Garden of Life is an “Extra” Virgin Coconut Oil – Is this Better than ‘Virgin’ Oils?
Garden of Life calls their coconut oil ‘extra virgin‘. They don’t specify what exactly they’ve done to the oil to give it the label of ‘extra virgin’.
I believe that all virgin coconut oils are made from 100% organic fresh coconut meat and the oil is created using the most natural ways possible without any excessive heat, chemicals or bleaches.
I think the ‘extra virgin’ label may be an attempt to separate themselves from other virgin coconut oils such as Spectrum Coconut oil or Nutiva Coconut Oil.

This coconut oil is certified organic by Quality Assurance International, an organization of the United States Department of Agriculture that provides organic certification to farmers and other food producers/providers.
So maybe this certified organic designation is what warrants the ‘extra virgin’ status….
Here’s a picture of a bottle of Garden of Life coconut oil I bought at a local organic food store.
It’s got the older label on it but it’s still the same brand.
I found the oil has a nice creamy texture and has the trademark scent of freshly picked coconuts. I found the taste and quality of the oil to be equal to other high quality virgin oils.
I’ve used this oil as a substitute for butters, margarine or shortening in baking and sauteing.
Studies have shown that coconut oil is great for dry skin and also works great as a natural hair conditioner.

You can get this coconut oil in 16 oz. and 32 oz. jars.
The 16 oz. jars provide about 32 servings of 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and the 32 oz. size provides 64 servings.
