Can you use fish oil on ADHD?

Fish oil is an excellent source of the omega 3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docoshexaenoic acid (DHA).

Research shows that some children who take omega 3 fatty acid supplements for ADHD may display improved behavior and attention levels.

ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition that usually occurs during childhood.

The symptoms include low attention spans, impulsive behavior and hyperactivity.

The National Institute of Health estimates nearly 4 – 10 percent of all children aged 4 to 17 have ADHD.

Treatment may involve behavior modification, counseling and medication.

One of the most interesting treatment options for ADHD is nutritional therapy…and what your child eats could have a direct impact on their mood and behavior.

Scientists Prove Fatty Acids in Fish Oil Improves ADHD Symptoms

Can the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil improve mood and behavior in children with ADHD?

Several studies indicate that having low omega 3 fatty acid levels increases your risk for mood disorders.

And a review of clinical trials published in the 2018 Issue of Neuropsychopharmacology Journal concluded that these fatty acids can improve symptoms and cognitive performance in children and adolescents with ADHD.

Here’s more research looking at the effects of fish oils on children with behavior and attention disorders:

  • A study published in 2007 Nutrition Journal showed children with ADHD given 16.2 grams of EPA and DHA for 8 weeks became more well-behaved with less hyperactivity and oppositional behavior.

  • The Oxford-Durham study gave 117 school children omega 3 fish oil supplements for 3 months and they all had better test scores in spelling and reading.

  • Australian scientists found 6 grams a day of fish oil is better than Ritalin for significantly improving behavior in school children. The most remarkable finding was the kids experienced better concentration and reduced restlessness without the side effects associated with stimulant medication.

What’s Best Fish Oil Dosage for ADHD?

Given the complex issues with treating attention deficit hyperactive disorders, there is currently no recommended fish oil dosage for ADHD.

More research is needed to determine an effective dosage for treating all forms of this health condition.

However, using a child-specific fish oil can provide the essential fats needed for optimal brain and eye development.

Experts also caution that not all symptoms of hyperactivity and inattention are caused by a deficiency of omega 3 fatty acids.

Parents of children diagnosed with attention deficit disorders should seek expert guidance before trying any alternative therapies.
