Review of Neptune Krill Oil Ingredients – Is It Better than other Krill Oils?
If you’ve ever been looking to buy krill oil, you may have heard of Neptune Krill Oil.
It’s sold by many different nutritional supplement companies and it’s one of the most popular types of krill oils available in North America.
However, with so many different types of oil to choose from, you may be wondering if Neptune Krill Oil ingredients are the same or better than the competition.
Once upon a time (in the late 1990’s) a Canadian biotech company called Neptune Technologies and Biosciences created one of the very first krill oils.
They claimed to have developed a secret cold-extraction process for making a highly-purified krill oil extract. The manufacturing process was so proprietary that they have actually patented it in a number of different countries.
The oil contained a powerful antioxidant and healthy omega 3 fatty acids bound to a phospholipid molecule. This unique combination of ingredients was completely different than fish oils.
They called their product Neptune Krill Oil (NKO) and it was the first and only krill oil whose health benefits were backed by clinical studies.
The krill oil extract was more efficiently absorbed by the body and it offered enhanced free-radical protection and extremely high purity levels.
The krill oil business is highly competitive with global sales exceeding 204.4 million. With so much money at stake, you can bet that each manufacturer will be claiming their product is better than the others.
With this mind, I set out to if Neptune Krill Oil’s ingredients are different than the competition….
Neptune Krill Oil Ingredients Include:
1. Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Experts call these essential fatty acids because your body needs them for proper cell function. Your body uses them to make important hormones and they also have an anti-inflammatory effect. The main fatty acids in Neptune Krill Oil are EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid).
Phospholipids are made up of phosphorous (a mineral) and lipids (a fat). Every one of your body cells are lined with a dual layer of phospholipids. They play a very important part in the maintenance and growth of all cells in your body.
It’s believed that the unique combination of phospholipids with the omega 3 fatty acids helps to increase absorption on a cellular level.
So it turns out that all krill oils contain a substance called Astaxanthin which is a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment and powerful antioxidant. You can find more detailed information and research studies at www.astaxanthin.org.
In a nutshell, this powerful substance can play a vital role in cancer, cardiovascular diseases, eye health, neuro-degenerative diseases, aging, immune response, exercise and more.
Let’s Take a Closer Look a Neptune Krill Oil Ingredient Label:
So here’s a close-up of an ingredient label of some Neptune Krill Oil (NKO) I bought at my local health food store. The label shows the exact ingredients and amounts you’ll receive in two soft gels.
You can see that 1000 mg. of soft gels will give you 150 mg EPA and 90 mg of DHA. You also get 400 mg of phospholipids and 1.25 mg of astaxanthin and other ingredients.
Now I believe that most krill oils are extracted from Antarctic krill, so I would assume that the ingredients would be primarily the same from a different krill oil manufacturer.
However, due to Neptune Technologies’ patent extraction process, you’ll only find Neptune Krill Oil ingredients in this exact formulation.
While the dosage of EPA and DHA may seem low compared to many fish oil supplements, researchers believe that the phospholipids may actually help increase how well your body absorbs the EPA and DHA.
This is why many krill oil soft gels are generally smaller than your average 1ooo mg fish oil soft gel.
You may find that a lot of krill oils tend to cost a bit more per dose compared to fish oils and you’ll have to determine yourself whether the added cost is worth it.
Are Neptune Krill Oils a Superior Krill Oil?
I think this is one of the better krill oils due to the actual research that’s supported the development of this product.
A number of studies have shown that Neptune Krill Oil ingredients helped reduce inflammation in athletes and arthritis, reduces PMS symptoms and lowered triglycerides and cholesterol levels better than fish oil.
Neptune Krill Oil ingredients also come with specific dosages of active ingredients that you may not get with other krill oils.
You can get other oils, but the dosages of the active ingredients may be slightly different.
Another factor to consider is the patented technology that went into creating this highly purified product.
Is there other krill oils that match up to Neptune Krill Oil?
When Neptune Krill Oil was first released to the public, one of its main competitors in North America was Superba krill oil, made by Aker Biomarine (a Norwegian biotech company).
I think Superba Krill Oil is another fine product and I would put these two head-to-head with regards to quality and purity.
However, Aker Biomarine recently bought out Neptune Technologies’ entire krill oil business. They now supply Neptune Krill Oil and Superba to North America and other parts of the world – making them one of the largest krill oil suppliers in the world.
Superba and NKO have their own proprietary and trademarked manufacturing process. There are some slight differences in the amount of active ingredients.
While there are dozens of different supplement companies that sell krill oil, only a handful of products become the most popular for a variety of reasons.
