My Review of Nutiva Coconut Oil

My jar of Nutiva Coconut Oil

I’ve tried a number of different coconut oils and Nutiva Coconut Oil is one brand that I highly recommend for a number of reasons.

First of all, it’s a virgin, cold-pressed oil. I prefer cold-pressed oils because there was no heat involved in creating the oil.

I believe that heat exposure may increase the risk for damaging the healthy fatty acids found in the product.

And the great thing about ‘virgin’ coconut oil is there’s usually minimal to zero exposure to any types of bleach, deodorants or other chemicals that may be required to make a heavily ‘refined’ oil.

Who is Nutiva?

So the company Nutiva got a lot of attention in the late 1990’s when they introduced the very first hemp food bar to North America.

At the time, not many people knew about the nutritional value of hemp foods.

As the company grew, they started adding organic cold-pressed hemp oils, hemp protein powders, nutritious power bars, and of course, their trademark extra virgin organic coconut oil.

How Nutiva Coconut Oil is Made

nutiva coconut oilNutiva claims that their oil is certified organic and they only use non-genetically modified coconut crops.

In order to be considered organic, the coconuts have to as fresh as possible. Nutiva claims they wait no less than 10 hours between chopping up the coconut and then pressing out the oil.

One of the health benefits of coconut oil is the healthy fatty acids.  The oil contains a medium chain fatty acid called Lauric Acid.

Lauric acid is now being studied for its anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. You can learn more by visiting my page on The Health Benefits of Lauric Acid.

The Nutiva website claims that their oil provides up to 50% lauric acid. I don’t know how accurate this claim can be as individual coconuts can provide various levels of the fatty acids.

So unless Nutiva is able to provide standardized fatty acid levels to ensure you’re getting minimal amount of lauric acid, I think they can make the claim “…up to 50%…” but there is no guarantee how much lauric acid you’re really getting.

I’ve tasted and tried many different products and I found Nutiva’s coconut oil to be very smooth, light and creamy.

I found it very similar in taste and texture to Tropical Traditions coconut oil, as well as Garden of Life Coconut oil.

How Much Does Nutiva Coconut Oil Cost?

If you go to you can order directly from the company or you can buy it from a local health food store or online.  You can get this product in a variety of different sizes. It comes in 15 ounce, 29 ounce and 54 ounce jars. You can also get 1 gallon and 5 gallon jugs.

Here’s a list of prices I got from their online store (prices may change):

Cost per Size
Size Cost Cost Per Ounce
15 oz $11.99
80 cents
29 oz $21.99
76 cents
54 oz $32.99
61 cents
1 Gallon (128 oz) $59.99
47 cents
5 Gallon (640 oz) $270.00
42 cents

You can see that buying the larger sizes leads to greater savings per ounce. At press time, was offering Free Shipping if your order is more than $30 and there’s a $6.50 charge for orders under $30.

If you’re looking for a pure virgin coconut oil, I think that Nutiva products may meet your needs. While there are many other brands to choose from, I think that Nutiva offers a high quality product. The company is also an earth-friendly business as they claim 1% of all company sales go to sustainable agriculture.

Here’s more reasons why I like Nutiva coconut oil:

  • It’s certified organic and non-GMO
  • Made from fresh coconuts, not dried copra
  • Cold-processed so no heat was used that may potentially damage the fatty acids in the oil.
  • Unrefined
  • Chemical-free
  • Not fermented or unbleached
  • Non-deodorized and non-hydrogenated
  • Has a pure white color like fresh coconuts
  • Tastes like fresh coconut
  • Has a fresh coconut fragrance
