Using virgin coconut oil for thinning hair and widows peak

I just bought some Virgin Coconut Oil. I'm 21 years old and I have very thin hair and I have a widows peak. A friend told me about coconut oil and I decided to use it; last night was my first treatment and my hair feels smoother.

I was told to use it 7 days a week for 3 months and my hair will be thicker and my widows peak will go away. I will post an update every week to share my results. Any tips or advise will be welcome.

Reply: Thanks for sharing your initial results. Many people have found virgin coconut oil helps soften and condition dry, damaged hair.

A study using coconut oil on dry hair found the oil actually penetrates the hair shaft and reduces protein loss.

There's no scientific studies showing virgin coconut oil can help re-grow hair that has been lost. Reports of using fish oils for hair loss may only offer anti-inflammatory benefits if hair loss is due to an inflammatory condition.

Hair loss can be caused by a number of different factors. Increased levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) have been shown to accelerate hair loss. Inflammatory conditions of the scalp and scalp conditions such as alopecia may also affect hair growth.

Nutritional supplements that reduce DHT may offer some benefit to some users. The herb, saw palmetto, has been reported to help reduce DHT levels as well as enhance prostate health.

Aside from using expensive hair transplant treatments, there are alternative treatments that may reduce or regrow hair.

Low-level Intensity Laser treatments have been shown to help improve cellular metabolism of the scalp and hair shaft leading to an improved environment for hair growth.

Topical treatments such as Rogaine may also offer some benefits for individuals that respond positively to this type of medication.

A person's diet, hereditary make-up, and lifestyle factors such as stress, may also affect hair growth and hair loss.

It's important to try to enhance and keep the hair already on the head. Once the hair is gone it may be more difficult to re-grow hair in that area. Good luck and hope this information is helpful.
