Home Remedies for
Canker Sores

If you're looking for one of the best home remedies for canker sores, keep reading....

Canker sores, also known as aphthous ulcers, are whitish sores that appear on the inside of your mouth, tongue and inner lips.

No one really knows why they appear, but some believe they could be a reaction to stress, eating too much of a certain type of food or a dietary deficiency.

Most canker sores can last a few days and I've had a few stubborn ones that lasted over a week. Canker sores can be quite painful when you eat or drink certain foods, or when you brush your teeth. Even running your tongue over the sore can be a painful experience. So what can you do to treat them?

Do You Know these Popular Canker Sore Remedies?

You can get many canker sore remedies at your local drug store. I found most over-the-counter remedies use an antiseptic and pain reliever to reduce symptoms.

A popular canker sore remedy is Orajel Mouth Sore Medicine. Oragel has a number of products for mouth sores and herpes sores. Most of their products use benzocaine to dull the pain and benzalkonium chloride as an antiseptic. I've used their products and found they do help dull the pain but I didn't find they helped heal the sore any faster.

Another product I've tried is Fletcher's Liquid Sore Mouth Medicine. This product contains aluminum potassium sulfate and potassium chlorate. They use aluminum potassium sulfate as an astringent - it constricts body tissues and restricts blood flow to the canker sore and the potassium chlorate acts as a disinfectant.

I found this product really stings when I applied it to my sores. It would dull the pain for about an hour and then I had to keep applying it throughout the day to get any sort of lasting pain relief.

While these products provide some temporary pain relief I don't believe they're a real cure for canker sores. I think a canker sore is like an ulcer of the mouth and you need something that will reduce the inflammation and promote healing. I don't think any of the above chemicals provide this type of anti-inflammatory/healing action.

One remedy your dentist may know about is Debacterol. Debacterol is used for treating mucosal ulcers and lesions. It contains a mixture of phenolics and sulphuric acid. These ingredients attack and seal up the dead tissue, leaving only healthy tissue behind.

Dentists claim Debacterol offers permanent and rapid pain relief. Healing time is reduced from weeks to 3 - 5 days, depending on the size of the canker sore. Debacterol is an FDA regulated product that's sold only to medical professionals in the United States. This means you may need a Doctor's prescription to get it. So while this is an effective and proven treatment, it's not doesn't fall under the category of 'home remedies for canker sores'.
