Using Oil of Oregano on Alopecia Barbae

(Anonymous)

I recently purchased Oil of Oregano to try and treat alopecia barbae located on my chin. Basically I have patches where the beard stopped growing on my face. Does anyone know if the oil would help my hair grow back? Thanks!

Scientists believe Alopecia Barbae is an autoimmune disease where a person's immune system attacks the hair follicles. How it develops is still unclear - it's believed white blood cells attack the hair follicles, mistakenly thinking they're a threat to the rest of the body. Other researchers believe there's an inflammatory process occurring in the hair shaft, causing the hair to not grow or fall out.

Oil of Oregano has antimicrobial properties. If Alopecia was caused by a micro-organism there may be the possibility of trying Oil of Oregano. However, since research shows Alopecia may be an issue with the auto-immune system, Oil of Oregano may not be effective.

However, emu oil has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Emu oil studies found it increased new skin cell growth and reduced inflammatory chemicals in burned skin.

If Alopecia is caused by an inflammation in the hair shaft, you could try applying emu oil to the affected area to reduce the inflammation in the remaining hair shafts. This treatment has not been proven in any research studies. It should be noted that emu oil will not grow hair back in areas where the hair has completely fallen out. Good luck and I wish you success.
