Fish Oils and Arthritis - Can you use these healthy oils to reduce or cure joint pain?
Researchers believe there are some important health benefits from using fish oil for joint pain.
Fish oils are a natural source of the omega 3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosa- hexaenoic acid (DHA).
The latest research indicates these essential fatty acids can have a profound effect on inflammation, cellular function, immune response and cardiovascular health.
The benefits of using fish oil for joint pain may even include lessening the amount of corticosteroids and other prescribed drugs to manage these symptoms.
The following research studies indicate that omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil may have an anti- inflammatory effect in joint diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory joint pain.
Brazil - Did you know that the types of edible oils you get in your diet may help you fight or prevent joint pain?
Doctors in Brazil took a group of arthritis patients and gave them three types of diets - one diet group received fish oils, another received fish oils with olive oil and the final group took a placebo.
Researchers found patients getting fish oils experienced a major improvement in hand strength; and at 12 weeks of treatment there was decreased joint pain.
Six months later at follow-up, the fish oil group experienced an increase in mobility and movement, delayed onset of fatigue and better quality of life in everyday activities.

If you're like many, you may enjoy the summer season with barbeques and eating grilled steaks and hamburgers. The smell of charcoal and a juicy Rib-eye sizzling on the grill can be enough to make a meat-lover's mouth water.
But what if your meat-eating habits may contribute to increasing your risk for joint pain and arthritis?
Well, it turns out researchers in Germany think this may be the case.
Germany - In this study, doctors looked at three groups of arthritis patients who ate different diets. One group consumed a meat-based diet, the second group ate a vegetarian diet and the third group ate a vegetarian diet with fish oils.
|
Researchers found some members of the group eating an all-vegetarian diet experienced a decrease in the number of swollen and tender joints.
However, the arthritis patients that ate a vegetarian diet with fish oils experienced the greatest decrease in arthritis symptoms.
What was the cause for this change in symptoms? It's possible the consumption of a meat-based diet may increase the risk for inflammatory joint pain. Scientists have determined that a diet high in arachidonic acid (from red meat) may increase joint pain and inflammation.
Researchers postulate that limiting your food sources of arachidonic acid and increasing your levels of omega 3 fatty acids may counter this effect, thereby lessening symptoms of joint pain and tenderness.

Australia - Are all edible oils the same when it comes to relieving arthritis symptoms? Doctors had a group of rheumatoid arthritis patients take either:
- 3 to 6 capsules of omega 3 fish oils
- olive oil/corn oil mixture
Patients taking fish oils took a dose based on their weight. For every kilogram of bodyweight they received 40 mg. of omega 3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA.
This means a 75 kg. (165 lbs.) man would get 3000 mg. of omega 3's per day.
Study results showed the fish oils and arthritis group experienced decreased joint pain, compared to minimal benefits for the olive oil and corn oil group.
