Will fish oil interfere with fertility?

by Amber Alexander
(Jasper, Tn., U.S.A.)

I just started taking Spring Valley, three per day, enteric coated, 1200 mg, 3600 mg total omega-3, fish oil. First, I would like to know, even though it is not the most expensive brand, will it work? Also, I heard from a friend that it can cause problems with conceiving. So, I thought I would ask someone that may know what they are talking about. I appreciate your time! God Bless, Amber

Hi Amber,

Fish oils are an important source of the omega 3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These essential fats are critical for the healthy function and support of every cell in your brain, nerves, eyes, organs and hormones. In fact, research has proven that when you're deficient in EPA or DHA, you run the risk of having cardiovascular, memory and mood disorders.

Studies on fish oils and pregnancy show omega 3 fatty acids may help increase blood flow to the uterus, promoting an environment more conducive to conceiving and pregnancy. Women who took omega 3 fatty acids from fish oils also tended to carry their babies for longer terms, leading to increased birth weights. Fish oils will also help supply the important fat, DHA, for fetal brain development.

Here's an article from Dr. Sears on fish oils and fertility that you may find helpful. Dr. Sears has an excellent brand of high potency fish oil supplements called Zone Lab Omega 3 Concentrates. You can read my review of Dr. Sears fish oils here.

I think Spring Valley fish oils are a good choice as a general fish oil supplement. If you want a fish oil that supplies higher amounts of EPA and DHA, you'll have to use a high-potency fish oil. There are many to choose from, such as Dr. Sears Fish Oils and Nordic Naturals; just remember to look at the ingredient label to determine how much EPA and DHA you're actually getting in your fish oil. Good luck and hope this information is helpful.
