Using mixture of oils to kill head lice

by Miss. O
(Los Angeles, CA)

Hi, I am 28 year old special education teacher. About a week ago one of my students was infested with head lice. Since my class is primary MMR (Mild Mental Retardation) class most of our routine includes potty training, helping the kids eat and clothe....Nonetheless to say, it is hard to avoid head contact. Plus my students are very affectionate and love hugging everyone.:)

The minute I found out about my student I had the nurse check all my class. According to the nurse the rest of my class and myself were clean. I decided to still get some kind of lice treatment just in case. I went online and did some research. I decided to try using a tea tree oil and olive oil treatment.

In a cup I put 1/2 cup of 100% pure olive oil and added 12 drops of 100% pure Australian tea tree oil (Desert Essence). I massaged the oil combination through my scalp and hair, put on a shower cap, and left it in for 30 minutes. I rinsed the oil off with my regular shampoo, parted my hair in four sections and then combed through the hair with nit comb - small strands at a time. To my surprise I found 6 nits; two were dead but the other four were still alive! Although I did not find any lice I immediately repeated the olive oil and tea tree oil treatment for the second time. Second time around I did not find any more nits.

I washed all my bedding with my regular detergent, hot water, and added a few drops of tea tree oil. I also soaked all my brushes and hair stuff in hot water and added a few drops of tea tree oil.

Also, in a 8oz water bottle I mixed 7 ounces of water, 10 drops of tea tree oil, few drops of rosemary, lavender and cedar wood oil. I spray the mist every morning on my hair and clothing.

So far it seems to be working! I promise to let you know if I find any surprises or more class pets...:)

Forget Nix! Tea Tree Oil Works!
by: Christy

My daughter has been sent home 4 times in a month for lice because a friend in class that sits directly next to her has had a chronic case of lice. I've spent over $200 on Nix treatments and within a few days of treatment, the nits and lice would return no matter how often I checked her and treated her. The box claims "Prevents re-infestation up to 14 days". Yeah right! I was treating her with Nix (which contains a pesticide) every 3 days even though the recommendation was every 7-10 days and it still did not rid her of lice. I decided to do an internet search and luckily I came across an article about tea tree oil. I had some in my medicine cabinet and we've been using it in her shampoo for almost a week and the results are amazing. It smells horrible but it's worth it. Stop wasting your money on name brands with pesticides. I truly believe that lice have become immune to these types of treatments with pesticides; therefore, causing them to be ineffective, as they have proven to be in my case.

Tea Tree Oil WORKS!
by: Michelle T

My daughter received her gift of lice from her class room (Pre-K) on Tuesday. I treated her 'hip-length' hair with NIX that I bought from the drug store. Not knowing what I was doing, because I never had to deal with this before, I followed the directions. It took hours to comb through her long hair! The next day I bought tea tree oil and did the vegetable oil/tea tree oil wash and it worked! I put a plastic bag on her hair and left it for 1 hour. When we rinsed & combed it out, the eggs & bugs were falling out on the tile floor! I was amazed! Now, I am adding it to her regular shampoo and letting it sit during the entire time of her bath. We have been fighting this nemesis aggressively for 5 days and believe we are winning the battle. Everything in my home that is cloth, plush, or any type of fabric, has been washed & bagged & we are praying we are nearing the end!
