Oregano Oil and Pregnancy

by Lusine

I have read not to take oregano oil if pregnant, because it is known to increase blood in the uterus and weaken the lining. So what does oregano oil do to a uterus when not pregnant? Does it do the same or is it safe?

Hi Lusine, Current research hasn't shown any studies or health warnings that Oil of Oregano can affect the blood supply or lining of the uterus. There is some research that indicates Oil of Oregano may affect the absorption of iron; and research hasn't shown this affects the uterine environment. If you have concerns you may want to discuss this with your OB/GYN specialist. Here is more information on oil of oregano side effects that you may find helpful.

Kevin, you are 100% wrong about the safety of oregano oil and Pregnancy. Taking oregano oil internally causes contractions of the uterus and causes miscarriage. I learned this the hard way! I hope that this website is updated to warn women so that people that do a quick search don't get wrong information.

Kevin,

Sometimes human scientific studies can't be done when the non-scientific evidence suggests that patients may be put at too great a risk.

However, I do have this reference for you. "Oregano should not be used during pregnancy as it stimulates menstruation and may cause miscarriage."

Brinker F. Herb Contraindications and Drug Interactions 2nd ed. Sandy, OR: Eclectic Medical Publishers, 1998, 181.

Of course a woman should always consult with her physician, but word to the wary...

May cause uterine bleeding.

I used high doses of oil of oregano for a month to cure stomach trouble, which I self-diagnosed as H. Pylori (stomach bacterial infection.) Nothing I tried over a 5-year period helped my gastritis. Well, I'm here to tell you that oil of oregano totally cured this problem. However, even though I am post-menopausal, it caused me to have a short period, along with very swollen and tender breasts. Luckily, these unpleasant side-effects stopped as soon as I quit taking the oil of oregano. So, ladies, I would advise against taking this supplement if you are pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive.
