Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is a natural plant extract from the dried fruit rind of the South Asian fruit, Garcinia cambogia.

Marketed under the popular brand name, Citrimax, this plant extract is sold in a variety of different natural weight loss supplements, such as Natrol Pure Citrimax.

We all know how some weight loss supplements can cause unwanted side effects, such as nervousness, increased heart rate and blood pressure.

The exciting thing about HCA is it's been reported to promote fat loss without stimulating the central nervous system.

Studies look promising for this natural weight loss supplement. Earlier research found it increased serotonin levels in the brains of rats. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter linked to your appetite and feelings of well-being. Helping rats feel better is one thing, but what about human studies?

An 8 week study of 90 obese individuals taking 2,800 mg/day of HCA resulted in a 6.3% decrease in bodyweight and body mass index.

These same participants also showed:

  • 12.3% decrease in LDL cholesterol (the unhealthy cholesterol).

  • 8.6% decrease in triglycerides.

  • 6.3% decrease in total cholesterol.

  • 10.7% increase in HDL cholesterol (the healthy cholesterol).

  • Increase in excretion of urinary fat metabolites - a definitive marker of 'fat burning'.

Studies using lower amounts of HCA proved ineffective. So there may be some importance to the dosage used for an effective response.

The key to losing weight and keeping it off is by following a healthy diet and getting regular daily exercise.

This is supported by data from The National Weight Control Registry at Brown Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island.

Dr. Rena Wing, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and co-founder of the registry, tracks over 5000 adults who lost an average of 60 pounds and managed to keep it off for over 6 years.

She found 4 common behaviors that helped these people lose weight and keep it off:

  1. Eating a low-fat, low calorie diet with about 24% calories from fat.

  2. Frequently monitoring bodyweight.

  3. Being very physically active. Participants exercised about an hour or more a day. The average caloric expenditure was 2,800 calories per week on a variety of activities. This is equal to walking 28 miles a week, or four miles a day.

  4. Eating breakfast everyday. Researchers found this changes the pattern of eating little or no breakfast and/or lunch and then getting hungry and consuming all your calories later in the day.

Research shows the key to losing weight (and keeping it off) is by eating a balanced low calorie diet and getting plenty of exercise.

Many natural weight loss supplements claim to be 'natural' or 'herbal', but that still doesn't mean they're safe to use.

Remember that some products may cause unwanted reactions with certain drugs or pose a danger to people with medical conditions.

If you're unsure about the safety of any weight loss product, seek the advice of a medical professional before using it.

Successful weight loss should be a healthy and enjoyable experience. Studies show that people who adopt healthier lifestyles improve their quality of life and are able to maintain their new healthy bodyweights for longer periods of time.
