Using Oil of Oregano on Dog Rashes

by Donna (Breaux Bridge, LA)

I have heard that the oil helps with skin rashes(itching spots) on Golden Retrievers.

How do I administer the oil (exp. mix with what to spray as a topical) how many drops?

Or if I want to give orally. I have a 1 oz bottle. Thanks for your help!

Reply: Hi Donna, I’m not experienced in using Oil of Oregano on animals nor am I a veterinarian.

However, I looked at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control web page and it does list oregano plant species toxic to dogs and cats.

Based on this information, I would not give oil of oregano to any dog or cat, nor would I risk applying oil of oregano to their bodies as they could lick the oil off of their body which could poison them.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control claims that the oregano plant is a gastrointestinal irritant and the clinical signs are vomiting and diarrhea.

Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control site for more details.
