Experienced Mom with Tea Tree Oil and Lice

My oldest daughter has very thick curly hair. When she contacted lice I was 6 months pregnant and was not going to use chemicals so I used a combination of 1/2 olive oil and 1/4 tea tree oil (from the pharmacist). We saturate the hair, leave it on for 48 hours (just pull hair back in a ponytail - looks like you just got out of the shower), then pick every day for 3 -4 days after rinsing. Mix tea tree oil in your shampoo for the next month or so.

Reply: One of the main benefits of using tea tree oil for head lice is it doesn't contain any harmful pesticides. One of the risks when using head lice medication is they may contain low levels of pesticides. Applying these kinds of products to the scalp may increase your risk for the pesticides absorbing through the skin and getting into the blood stream.

The scalp has thin skin with many blood vessels. Any substance applied to the scalp or skin in general can get absorbed into the skin.

Tea tree oil does contain an antimicrobial ingredient called Terpinen 4 OL. Some of the side effects from tea tree oil include mild allergic reactions and skin irritation if the concentration of Terpinen 4 OL is too high.

People with sensitive skin or allergies may want to try using a diluted form of tea tree oil if they're going to apply it to their skin. This may reduce your risk for any allergic reactions or irritation that can occur with higher concentrated formulas.
