Will Oil of Oregano Help Against Osteomylitis?

by Derek MacMenigall
(ex NZ now living in Phoenix Az )

As a result of an open fracture in my arm (elbow)I have contracted an infection in the bone of my arm (osteomylitis). I'm on a heavy dose of antibiotic to try and control the infection to a level where I can have a prosthetic elbow installed. In the same accident I also lost my spleen. I have to come off my antibiotics for 14 days to see if my body can control the infection before I am assessed for my operation. Will Oil of Oregano help my body control the infection in this situation?

Reply:Oil of Oregano has been shown to have anti-microbial properties. Studies show Oil of Oregano is effective against E.Coli, Salmonella enterica, and Listerica Monocytogenes.

Unfortunately, there are limited human studies on the dosage and concentration of oregano oil used to control infections; particularly for infection sites affecting prosthetic limbs.

It's recommended you follow your current care plan and consult with your Physician regarding any changes made to your medications used to control or reduce the level of infection in your elbow.
