I just purchased Organic Virgin Coconut Oil to begin using on my skin. It does say unrefined. Is this what I want because I also saw refined at the store. Thanks!

Re: Refined vs. Unrefined Coconut Oil

Hi Raina, Congratulations on adding this healthy oil to your lifestyle. There's a big difference between refined and unrefined coconut oil. When making refined coconut oil the coconuts are dried in the sun before being sent to a factory. The dried coconut shells are then soaked in a solvent(sometimes they used hexane) which causes the oil to leach out. The oil is extracted from the solvent and high pressure steam is used to sterilize and decontaminate it. The oil is then subjected to bleach and deodorized before it is considered safe to eat.

Unrefined coconut oil is also called virgin coconut oil. The coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconuts and it isn't exposed to chemicals, high heat or solvents. The fresh coconuts are generally pressed to extract the water and oil before allowing the two to separated. The virgin coconut oil is then ready to be used. This type of coconut oil is filled with the natural fatty acids that nature intended and is the traditional method used by Pacific islanders for hundreds of years.

Here's more detailed information on the difference between virgin and regular coconut oil. I hope you enjoy the health benefits if virgin coconut oil.
