Using Fish Oils on Eczema?

(Yun Yu)

I'm still struggling with my daughter's skin problem. She's had eczema since she was 3 months old. It was quite bad and she suffers a lot from itchiness. She's 3 years old now but the eczema is still there. I think she is finally old enough to take some supplement, so I wonder if I should give her some fish oils. She has a food allergy too so she can't have a lot of healthy food like sea food (shellfish), eggs and nuts. Please advise me should I give her fish oil at all? If yes, what kind? Thanks a lot!

Hi Yun, There are studies showing some health benefits of fish oils on eczema. Fish oils were shown to reduce inflammation and may play a role in reducing some symptoms of eczema.

If your daughter has an allergy to seafood, she may have an allergic to fish oil. However, if she's only allergic to shellfish, you may be able to give her fish oils. If she can eat fish, there should be no problems with giving her fish oil. However, I would recommend consulting with her doctor before taking any kind of nutritional supplement that may affect your daughter's treatment plans.

There are many high quality fish oils for children. Most of these fish oils come flavored in lemon or orange flavors to make them more palatable for children.

I like using liquid fish oils as they'll generally supply more omega 3 fatty acids per dose compared to the soft gels.

Good luck and I hope the use of these healthy oils will help improve your daughter's health.
