Dog owner's experience with fish oils

by Kathy Gornik
(Lexington, Kentucky)

After adding 4 capsules of fish oil per day (400 EPA 200 DHA), two in the morning and two in the evening, my dog's coat improved greatly as did his morning stiffness. But I think it might be upsetting his stomach. Does anyone have a similar experience? Do you have another way of getting Omega 3s in my dog's diet? I'm trying to avoid grains of any type, so I don't want to add ground flax seed. But what about flax seed oil?

Reply:You could look at using lower amounts of fish oil to see if there's any reduction in his gastrointestinal symptoms. You could also try using a different brand of fish oils to see if there is any change in your dog's stomach problems. If you're not using a highly-purified fish oil there's a possibility of exposure to rancid fish oils which may contribute to stomach problems; these same problems are found in humans that ingest rancid fish oils.

Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Fish Oil Dog & Cat Supplement
is a pretty reputable brand for fish oil supplements. You could also try using a non-grain dog food supplement that contains high amounts of fish for omega 3 fatty acids.
Honest Kitchen Zeal Grain-Free Dehydrated Dog Food
is specifically made for sensitive dogs. It doesn’t contain corn, soy, rice, beet pulp or wheat. It is also grain-free, gluten-free and free of flaxseed and white potatoes.

Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to provide anti-inflammatory properties for humans and dogs. Including these health fats in your dog's diet can help maintain and fortify your dog's nutritional health.

Small dog and fish oil pill

by Candy

so cute

so cute

My dog is under 10 lbs and I was having a hard time with giving her a fish oil pill, because they were all too big for her to swallow. I've tried using liquid fish oil, but it turns out she hates it and it would go bad really fast in the fridge.
I found this small fish oil pill by Packenzie ( from Petite Pet Pills) - just for cats and small dogs. It's made of pure salmon oil and she takes it every day - it's very easy and the right dosage. Her fur looks great - and her skin has no problems.

Reply: Some dog owners will puncture the fish oil soft gel with a needle and pour the oil onto their dog's food. Depending on the type of dog food you used, they may not be able to taste the fish oil because the taste and smell of the dog food covers it up. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Sardines for Dogs

by Shannon Gyles
(Canada)

A few months ago my 15 month old dog Harley started getting a itchy coat and dry, dull looking hair and increased hair loss. I started giving him sardines in spring water daily (which he absolutely goes crazy for). They are very high in omega 3 acids and I must tell you he has the shiniest, healthiest coat I have ever seen! People always comment on how healthy he looks. I would highly recommend this to any dog owners out there with the same issues. It also has stopped the intense shedding he had. If you don`t want the added calories then get a good quality fish oil you would take yourself and break open the capsules and put some in his regular food...highly, highly recommend this!

Reply: Thanks for sharing your tip with us! Sardines are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids and provide a convenient way to provide these healthy fats to your dog.

Dog Owner and Fish Oils

by Vera
(Prince George's County, Maryland)

My dog was itching real bad, scratching his neck and I went online to see if there's was a remedy for it, he has no rash or anything, just red from scratching his neck, they said Fish Oil Omega-3 and I put the liquid from the capsule on his neck and he hasn't scratched his neck yet. It worked instantly. I thank you for telling me about the Fish Oil. I used the Fish Oil Omega-3 by Nature's Bounty from my self and it really worked. Thank you for telling me about the Fish Oil.

Reply: Hi Vera, Great to see you got such good results from fish oils. Your dog may benefit from fish oils even more if you include omega 3's in his diet. Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oils may help reduce joint pain and other inflammatory conditions. Some pet owners mix the omega 3 oils into the dog food, depending on the flavor of the oil. You can choose from a variety of products that supply these healthy fats, such as Life Line Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil for DogsPet Fish Oil Nutritional Supplements). Thanks again for sharing your experience here.
