Using emu oil on lichen planus

by Corinne

Has anyone any experience in using emu oil on lesions caused by lichen planus, ie on skin, vulva and scalp? I am particularly interested in its anti-inflammatory properties and the possibility of using it instead of topical steroids. What potency would be best?

Hi Corinne, There are currently no medical studies looking at the effects of emu oil on Lichen Planus.

While researchers are unsure of the cause for Lichen Planus, this inflammatory skin condition may respond favorably to the application of emu oil.

Information from the U.S. National Library of Medicine indicates Lichen Planus may be treated with the following:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001870

  • Antihistamines

  • Immune-suppressing medications

  • Lidocaine mouth washes - to numb the area temporarily and make eating more comfortable (for mouth lesions)

  • Topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation

  • Vitamin A creams - to reduce inflammation, itching and promote skin healing

  • Ultraviolet light therapy may be helpful in some cases

Many of these treatments address the inflammatory condition of the skin.

Emu oil has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect on skin. While there are no published medical studies looking at this relationship, there is a possibility you could use emu oil on certain forms of Lichen Planus.

Emu oil is typically not available in different strengths or dosages. Therefore, you may want to consider using an emu oil that has been properly refined for use on the skin.

Emu oil is hypo-allergenic and non-comedogenic. However, it may benefit you to try a small skin text to ensure you do not experience a negative reaction to emu oil.

Please remember that this information is not to be construed as medical advice. I would recommend consulting with your family physician or dermatologist before beginning application of emu oil.

Good luck and I would love to hear what your results are should you choose to use emu oil for your particular skin condition.
