Too much GLA in puraEPA brand fish oil supplements?

by Alexandra
(Beijing)

Hi, I have a concern regarding a brand of fish oil which I have been taking for more than a year. Its called Pura EPA and it can only be bought online. The ingredients are the following; EPA 300 mg, GLA (gamma linolenic acid) 22 mg and vitamin E 1 mg.

Does this have too much GLA in it? If so, what could the potential hazards to health be?

Many thanks
Alex

Reply: Hi Alex, Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega 6 fatty acid found predominantly found in vegetable oils.

Some popular food sources of GLA include evening primrose oil, hemp seed oil and borage oil.

GLA is reported to have anti-inflammatory effects and is sometimes prescribed by holistic practitioners for immune disorders and inflammatory conditions such as eczema and arthritis.

The University of Maryland Medical Centre advises that dosages of GLA should now exceed 3000 mg per day as it may increase inflammation in the body.

It appears that the GLA in your supplement only contains 22 mg. and is well below the maximum dosages recommended by some health authorities.
