Spring Valley Fish Oil and Discolored Softgels

The last several bottles of Spring Valley fish oil (One per day Omega 3) softgels have had 6-10 BROWN capsules instead of the light yellow colored ones. Are the brown ones safe?

Thank you.

re: Discolored Softgels in Spring Valley Fish Oils

I can't speak specifically about Spring Valley Fish Oils, but I have found brown soft gels in other brands of fish oil soft gels. I believe this may be due to specific ingredients mixed with the fish oil.

Some fish oil manufacturers use natural antioxidants (vitamin E) to help keep the fish oil fresh. These fish oils may also contain natural fruit extracts or flavors (lemon or orange). These natural ingredients or flavorings may become concentrated on an area of the soft gel or completely coat the surface of the soft gel with a discolored or brown color.

I found that some of these spots may dissappear if you shake the soft gel. Other times the soft gel is completely 'stained' with this darkened brown color and it's permanent.

If you're concerned about ingesting these off-color soft gels, then you don't have to take them. You could also try piercing open these soft gels to pour out the oil so you can see it the oil itself is discolored. In my experience, I found that the oil was completely fine and it was only the soft gel that was stained inside.

Good luck and I hope this information was helpful.
