Organic Refined Coconut Oil...Does it still have the benefits of Virgin (Unrefined) Coconut oil?

In the past I bought a jar of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for the use of cooking. I wanted to use in place of olive oil for sauteeing and pan frying because it stays stable even while being heated. I found that the natural coconut flavor comes through on every dish that I made that the only thing I ended up using it for was cooking eggs in the morning.

I recently bought a jar of Spectrum Expeller Pressed Organic Coconut Oil that is Refined. When I opened it up I was pleased to find that it did not have the intense coconut smell, because I want to use it for cooking everything, including dishes that would not taste good with an added coconut flavor.

My question is; Is it better to use the refined coconut oil for sauteing rather than olive oil? Also, is it ok to use the organic refined coconut oil in dishes that would not taste good if the coconut flavor was present in place of the intense smelling virgin (unrefined) coconut oil?

Lastly, is it a better refined coconut oil because it is from a reliable organic company? Thanks for your time and response.

re: cooking with refined coconut oil
by: Kevin

I think it's better to use refined coconut oil rather than olive oil. Coconut oil has a higher heat point, meaning it can withstand higher cooking temperatures compared to olive oil.

I think it's actually healthier to use olive oil only for drizzling on salads and not heat cooking with it; however, olive oil may be healthier to use than corn oil. The problem is exposing the olive oil to high cooking temperatures and the risk of destroying the healthy fatty acids in the oil.

Unrefined coconut oil is the purest form of virgin coconut oil you can use. It has all the highest amount of healthy fatty acids in the oil since it has the least exposure to heat and other processing methods used in refined coconut oils.

Refined coconut oils may be exposed to higher heat or other methods for purifying the oil; this is why a lot of refined coconut oils lose their coconut scent and flavor - it has been processed out of the oil.

Refined coconut oil is good to use if you don't want that added scent and flavor of coconuts in your dishes.

Unrefined coconut oils will impart that tropical coconut oil scent and flavor to your dishes.

Which one to use will depend on your own cooking choices and if you want the flavor and scent of coconuts in your dishes.

I think Spectrum is one of the better natural oil companies. You can read more about them in my review of Spectrum coconut oils.
