Oil of Oregano causing abdominal pain

Can oregano oil cause severe abdominal pain, cramping and diarrhea? The first time I took several drops several times a day it got so bad that I became extremely nauseous and developed the worst migraines I'd ever had in my life. My ND told me to stop taking it cause it can be toxic and hopefully I hadn't given myself and ulcer. The second time I was taking it as part of a candida cleanse and by the second day the abdominal pain, cramping and diarrhea started again. I stopped taking the liquid part of the cleanse immediately since I did not want it to get as bad as last time. However, when I take oregano oil in a powdered capsule form it does not cause these symptoms. Any help would greatly be appreciated as I am trying to get fungus under control to stop my eczema.

re: Oil of Oregano and Abdominal Pain

Hi Amy, There are no documented studies showing Oil of Oregano can cause abdominal pain. However, depending on how much you're taking and the strength of the oil, there is a possibility for side effects for any type of supplement one is taking. In your case I would stop taking Oil of Oregano if it consistently gives you abdominal pain and migraines. What's interesting is you mentioned you don't get these symptoms when you take Oil of Oregano capsules. If you wish to continue taking Oil of Oregano then you may want to avoid the oil and only use oregano oil that comes in capsules. Good luck with your cleanse and hope this information is helpful.

Oregano and abdominal pain
by: Anonymous

I took wild oregano oil for intestinal candida, and I used enteric capsules to put it in so that it would not be released until it reached the intestine. I developed severe, constant abdominal pain. I stopped taking the oregano but the pain persisted for several weeks. I wasn't sure if it was the oregano or not, my doctor diagnosed diverticulitis, but even with antibiotics there was no improvement. Anyway, I kind of dismissed the oregano as a cause.
However, I now have a tooth abscess and have to wait to see a dentist (I live in the UK) so I decided to take the oregano again as an antibiotic. I have taken it for one day (one drop three times a day under the tongue) and my abdominal pain has returned. Same pain, same area. Oregano seems to have this effect on me, so I won't be using it again. Shame.

Oil of Oregano and abdominal pain

I experienced the same kind of cramping-like pain in my abdomen when I first started taking it. I started drinking more water and taking a little less Oreganol. I was taking it throughout the day under my tongue and in water (probably way too much) for an acne problem. I also applied it topically, my oregano was P73 already mixed with some olive oil. I still take it under my tongue and then follow with a swish of water but only about 4 times a day. I make sure I have plenty to drink throughout the day and I haven't had the abdominal pain since.

Abdominal Pain with Oil of Oregano
by: Anonymous

Yes, I believe oil of oregano can cause abdominal pain, especially if you have a history of ulcers. This happened to me. After almost 9 years without a flare-up, I had extreme pain after taking oil of oregano. I think I took too much and I didn't take it in capsule form. Its benefits are so profound I am trying it again, making my own capsules and taking it in lower doses. I am treating suspected strep. We will see if I can tolerate the oil of oregano in capsule form.

Stomach upset and diarrhea
by: Anonymous

I have been looking for an effective treatment for folliculitis (infected hair follicles). I have been treated by my doctor with antibiotics that did not produce definitive results; as the bumps came back after finishing my antibiotics regime. I read about Oregonol online and decided to give it a try. I took two drops under my tongue after finishing my dinner (was instructed to take with food). I took those drops at about 7 PM and at 1 AM I became nauseated and vomited 5 times. Two hours later at about 3 AM I had diarrhea and vomiting. I woke in the morning at 8 AM with a headache and more diarrhea. I have decided trying the oil of oregano P73 topically to see if that has any positive effect. Will keep you posted.

abdominal pain

I had recently started taking oil of oregano for candida and parasites in my stomach. I took the supplements. The direction was for 1 or 2 pills 20 min before meals. For the first week and a half, I was fine. Then I started getting pain in my stomach, side and back. I suspected that my kidneys and liver might have been affected, so I stopped for a day and noticed I was feeling better so I reduced the dose to 1 a day and the pain came back so I stopped totally.

Currently I'm taking milk thistle and drinking lots of water with lemon. Today is the second day, and I'm feeling a lot better. Is it possible that I was in the die off stage and my body had too much toxin? I'm thinking of waiting a few weeks and continue the cleanse with caprylic acid.

Oil of oregano causing stomach pain
by: Anonymous

I recently tried taking a few drops of oregano oil to fight candida, and I also have toenail and foot fungus, and a middle ear infection - I have had recurring middle ear infections all my life that only ever seem to clear up when I take antibiotics. I was hoping the oregano oil would help these infections. But I have had severe stomach pains for the past few weeks, after stopping taking the oregano oil.

I used to get similar stomach pains all the time, not related to oregano oil. I wondered if Homeopaths use a 'homeopathically-prepared' version of oregano oil that cures this stomach pain on a like cures like basis?
