How to determine PCB levels in Fish Oils

by Jeff
(Moorhead, MN.)

How do I know the levels of PCB's that I have in my fish oil capsules?

Reply: Hi Jeff - The fish oil industry is not regulated so it's up to us, the consumer, to determine if the fish oil we're using has been tested for PCB's, mercury, and other contaminants.

A couple of fish oil manufacturers claim to use molecular-distillation, such as Nordic Naturals Fish Oils and Carlson Labs Fish Oils. Molecular distillation is a process used to purify the fish oil to ensure the oils have low contaminants. I think these brands are good fish oils, and there are many other high quality brands out there.

Other companies may have their fish oils tested by an outside lab, such as the International Fish Oil Standards. If you visit their website, you'll find a list of fish oils that have been tested for omega 3 concentrations and PCB levels.

Doing a little research on the company that makes your nutritional supplements may help you choose the best quality product for you and your family. Good luck and I hope this information helps you. ~Kevin
