Healtheries Cod Liver Oil is sold at the supermarkets here in New Zealand. Is this a good product and are the vitamins added later?(as you've suggest some products do have this)
Reply: Hi Richard. I live in Canada and am not familiar with this product as it's not available here. I visited the Healtheries website and located their information on Healtheries Cod Liver Oil.
Looking at the product information it doesn't indicate whether they've added the Vitamins A & D to the oil or if it's naturally sourced from the fish livers. My research has shown that vitamin levels in natural cod liver oil would fluctuate from fish to fish, depending on their diet.
Therefore, for a company to guarantee a minimal amount of vitamins A & D in each dose would indicate to me that there may be some supplementation of vitamins to the oils. I don't necessarily think this is a good or bad thing. Some people prefer to take their oil in it's completely natural state and prefer not to have the vitamins added to them.
Looking at the product description it does appear to be a good quality oil. I like that it's cold-pressed (to avoid any heat damage to the oils and fatty acids) and they also claim that no solvents were used to process the oil - another nice thing to see. It's also nice that the oil is packaged in a dark bottle to prevent light oxidation.
They also claim their cod liver oil has been tested for PCB's, heavy metals, dioxins and pesticides. Unfortunately, there's no proof of these test results available on their website so we can't know for certain what these results are.
Richard, if you decide to try these oils I would love to hear your opinion on them. Feel free to share your comments on my Cod Liver Oil Forum. I'm sure there are others who would be interested to hear your thoughts and comments. ~ Kevin
