Fish Oils and Weight Gain

by David Culshaw
(Brisbane, Australia)

Both my wife and I have been taking fish oils for the past 8 months. The fish oils have reduced my arthritis and knee pain. On the negative side, we both seem to have put on weight, my wife more than me.

I have a very healthy diet and a moderate alcohol intake. I have never gained so much weight and the only thing that I've introduced into our diets is fish oils. I take around three per day.

Has anybody else had this problem? What can you do to prevent the weight gain and still use the fish oils.

Fish Oils and Weight Gain
by: Kevin

I haven't found any research on fish oils causing weight gain.

If you look at the label from a bottle of Carlson Liquid Fish Oils (half way down the page), you'll see it only provides 40 calories per teaspoon.

A 1000 mg. softgel of fish oil will provide only around 10 calories.

It's puzzling why you gained weight as fish oils don't slow down your metabolism nor cause a drastic increase in your caloric intake.

I haven't changed anything except taking the fish oil. In fact I have INCREASED my exercise level including another day of weight training and cardio. I have gained about 4-5 lbs since starting this and have no other explanation.
