Recent research indicates fish oil may improve your heart health and reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease.
There are many ways you can maintain or enhance your cardiovascular health. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), you can make many positive changes to your current lifestyle that may reduce your risk for heart disease.
Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise are two of the main lifestyle changes you can make to enhance your health and cardiovascular fitness. Additional lifestyle changes recommended include:
Reducing stress
Quitting smoking
Increasing your intake of healthy oils

Other factors include getting regular check-ups and monitoring your cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Many people do not show or feel any symptoms of heart disease (including high blood pressure and cholesterol/triglyceride levels); these unfortunate individuals may be at a high risk for heart attack or sudden cardiac death without even knowing it.
However, research now shows you may be able to reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke with omega 3 fatty acid fish oils.
Fish oils contain omega 3 fatty acids, healthy fats that have anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic properties.
A recent report from the Oct. 2008 issue of Quarterly Journal of Significant Omega-3 Research says you can significantly reduce your risk of sudden cardiac death up to 36% by taking a daily omega 3 fish oil supplement.
Gretchen Vannice, a Registered Dietician and expert on omega 3 fish oil supplements reviewed this study and discovered some amazing facts about omega 3 fatty acids and how they may prevent sudden cardiac death.
She found people who ate 250-500 mg of EPA and DHA/day (or 1-2 servings of oily fish/week) showed a 25-50% lower risk of dying from heart disease, compared to people who didn't eat seafood or take fish oil supplements.
Another study published in the July 2009 issue of International Journal of Cardiology looked at 47 research papers on the effects of fish oils on heart health.
The researchers concluded that an average daily intake of 3.25 grams of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), from fish oil, produces a significant reduction in triglycerides.
These findings were supported by another study in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition that 3.4 grams per day of omega-3 fatty acids reduced serum triglyceride concentrations by 27%.
How does fish oil reduce your triglyceride levels? Scientists believe fish oils lower the production of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver.

Adding fish oils to your diet is an excellent way to reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease. But how do you add this nutrient to your diet for optimum results?
Eating fish is a great way to get omega 3 fatty acids. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that normal healthy people without cardiovascular disease eat at least 2 servings of fatty fish per week. They suggest each serving should be 3 - 4 ounces of cooked mackerel, herring and salmon. Sardines and albacore tuna are also high in omega 3 fatty acids.
American Heart Association Fish Oil Recommendations:
If you have cardiovascular disease - up to 1 gram of fish oils with EPA and DHA.
If you have elevated triglyceride levels - 2 to 4 grams of fish oils per day, under a physician's guidance.
Please visit the American Heart Association's Information on Fish and Fish Oils for more detailed information.
Based on the latest research, you know that eating fish or using an omega 3 fish oil supplement can help optimize your heart health. Choosing the appropriate fish oil supplement can go a long way to helping you meet your goals.
If improving your heart's health and reducing heart disease are your primary goals, you need to use high quality fish oils proven to give results.
Studies have shown that pharmaceutical-grade fish oils will give you the highest levels of EPA and DHA, while limiting your exposure to mercury, toxins and other contaminants.
Dr. Sear's OmegaRX |
One brand of fish oil that provides high levels of omega 3 fatty acids is Dr. Sears Omega-3 Concentrates.
These highly-purified fish oil supplements provide anti-inflammatory benefits by using pharmaceutical-grade omega 3 esters.
Dr. Sears claims these omega 3 concentrates provide more anti-inflammatory properties than some regular fish oils and are regularly tested as an IFOS Fish Oil by third-party laboratories for purity.
Using a high-grade fish oil for heart health may:
Help support your circulation
Maintain a normal range of inflammatory markers
Promote healthy blood vessels
Support a healthy resting heart rate
Promote healthy blood lipid levels
Reduce triglyceride levels
Promote better heart health
Many cardiologists now recommend taking fish oil for heart health. This nutrient may be critical to helping you maintain normal, healthy cardiac function and may also help lower your risk of dying from heart disease.
