Deep Conditioning with Coconut oil

by Brittany K.
(Athens, GA)

Yesterday (Oct 10,2010) was the first time I'd used coconut oil for conditioning my hair. I used the Nutiva brand (extra virgin, cold pressed, etc.) and I really like it. It didn't take very much to coat my hair (I have shoulder length natural African-American hair (never permed)). I let it sit for about two hours. I rinsed with hot water first then cold water. I didn't wash all of it out and I could tell after flat-ironing my hair b/c it was heavier than usual but I believe this could be fixed by rinsing longer next time. I could notice the softness of my hair after rinsing it and I love it. Hopefully the amount of oil in my hair will decrease soon so my hair will fly in the wind again (it also doesn't look as full).

Hi Brittany, Thanks for sharing your experience with coconut oil. It's great to see you had such good results. It took me a couple of treatments to figure out exactly how much coconut oil to use in my hair; as well as how long to leave it in for maximum results. I found I had to slightly adjust the amount of coconut oil to use depending on my hair length and the type of coconut oil I used. I think you made a great choice in using Nutiva coconut oil. It's an excellent brand of coconut oil. I've used it many times to condition my hair and as a dietary supplement.

Coconut Oil Help
by: Jayye

Hey, I'm a big fan & user of coconut oil. Rinse for about 5-7 mins. with cold water only if your hair still feels too coated. Use a small, I repeat, small, maybe dime (or smaller) size amount of sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo and run through hair and rinse.

Your hair should not feel stripped at all and will help with the heavy feeling. Hope this helps :)

Coconut Oil Help Response
by: Brittany K.

Hi Jayye! I will definitely try this next time. I washed my hair first and then did the deep conditioning with the coconut oil so that may be the problem. Thanks!

Use Caution with Flat Iron
by: Anonymous

Hi, Just be careful if you still have a lot of oil in your hair when you flat iron. The heat of the iron could fry your hair in the oil. Just be careful with it!
