Country of Origin of Fish for Spring Valley Fish Oil

Please tell me where the Omega fish oils sold by Spring Valley are made. No where is it written on the bottles.

Reply:Spring Valley Fish Oils contain MEG-3 fish oils. These omega 3 concentrates are made by a company called Ocean Nutrition Canada; they are one of the largest producers of omega 3 supplements and fish oils.

I visited their website and they claim to use only small cold water fish (including sardines and anchovies) caught in a deep ocean off the west coast of South America. Looking at a map I would guess this is South Pacific Ocean.

Their products are reported to be tested to meet a number of international standards, including Health Canada, FDA and Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

I think these are a pretty good all-around omega 3 fish oil supplement. They generally provide about 30% omega 3 concentrations, which works out to about 300 mg. of omega 3 fatty acids per 1000 mg. soft gel.

Mackerel has high levels of mercury
by: Anonymous

My only concern is where the Mackerel come from. Mackerel from the Spanish Gulf has the highest levels of Mercury of all Mackerel. The N. Atlantic has the lowest levels in their Mackerel fish.

Spring Valley Fish Oils are made from fish located off the coast of Peru.

If you look on the web page Spring Valley Fish Oils Review you'll see these fish oils are from an omega 3 product called MEG-3 produced by a Canadian company called Ocean Nutrition Canada (ONC).

Here's a quote from the Ocean Nutrition Canada web site describing the source of their fish for making their fish oils:

"The fish oil we use is actually a byproduct of the fish meal industry from the anchovy and sardine fishery in Peru. These are the ocean's smallest, cleanest fish and they are very rich in Omega-3 EPA/DHA.

The fishery is based in the Peruvian upwelling region, where the cold Antarctic waters meet the steep continental shelf off South America's west coast. It's one of the purest, richest marine environments in the world.

The Peruvian fishery is highly regulated and protected to ensure bio-diversity and sustainability. In fact, the region has maintained a consistent fish population for more than 30 years. ONC has worked closely with the Association of Peruvian Anchovy Producers to discuss and support opportunities for the fisheries to obtain Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification - which promotes responsible and sustainable fishing practices. The producers are now actively pursuing certification and ONC is committed to providing on-going support for this initiative."
