Coconut Oil Great for Dreadlocks and Braids

by Natasha Vincent
(Montreal, CANADA)

Coconut oil is great for dreadlocks and braids. My daughter wears her hair in braids. For the past three years, I have used organic unrefined virgin coconut oil in her hair (made in the Philippines, of course)!

The ritual is a weekend long affair where her hair is rinsed on Friday evening, air-dried until damp, then I add about 1 tbs. of coconut oil to her hair before she goes to bed, with a shower cap.

For added protection from the wetness, I put a microfiber towel over the shower cap. The next morning, her hair is washed and ready for a new braid style!

After wearing dreadlocks for almost 10 years, I've only used coconut oil for the past four and I'll never go back!

The feeling is tremendous even though I don't typically leave it on overnight. No need for a regular hair conditioner. Only a small amount of scalp oil (or even coconut oil)!

Do try it. Organic unrefined virgin coconut oil can be found in your local health food store.

Natasha, thanks for an excellent contribution to the forum.

I guess with hair in dreadlocks, keeping your hair moisturized is very important for maintaining healthy hair.

I think dreadlocks look so cool. Wish I could do that with my hair, but I'm stuck with poker-straight black hair.

Kevin :-)
