Coconut Oil Causing Facial Acne. Is it Not for Everyone?

by Melissa
(Canada)

I started using Virgin Coconut Oil on my face about 3 weeks ago. When I started using it I had no problems with acne at all now I have like 10 new spots on my face. I have read this is normal and to keep using it and they will go away! What should I do. I have been putting it on a damp clean face and then let it sit for about 1-2 minutes. I then put a hot wash cloth over my face let it sit for a min. then gentle dab my face to take some of the extra oil off. What should I do?
I love the soft feeling I have with it and really don't want to stop but the acne is really bad so please give me your ideas.

Thanks
Melissa

re: Coconut Oil causing Acne
by: Kevin

Hi Melissa, Some people may experience increased breakouts and whiteheads from using coconut oil on their faces. I would recommend using smaller amounts and avoid covering your face with a wet cloth. The wet cloth may be opening your pores, allowing the oil to penetrate deeper which may be encouraging acne breakouts.

I tried using virgin coconut oil on my face and found it really softened my skin, but it also caused breakouts. Some people that use coconut oil on acne will experience an increase in whiteheads.

Have you ever tried using a different oil on your face? One of my favorite skin oils is emu oil. I find it's an excellent facial oil that increases moisture, softens the skin, reduces redness and inflammation and is non-comedogenic and hypo-allergenic. I use emu oil on my face after showering (it works great under the eyes and reduces dry skin patches) and virgin coconut oil as a body oil. I found this technique of using body specific oils works great as my overall skin care regimen for moisturizing and skin softening.

Good luck, Melissa, and I hope this information is helpful. I'd love to hear back if this change will help your skin become healthier.

Reply: Hi Melissa, I'm happy to help out. If you've never used emu oil before, you may want to read my Guide to Buying Emu Oil. There are many high quality emu oils available from ranches in the United States and Canada. I'm a big fan of emu oil and I hope it works out for you. ~ Kevin

Emu Oil for Moisturizer
by: Raina

I was also going to suggest emu oil as a moisturizer for your face. I tried coconut oil on my face months back to assist with acne and found it made my face really smooth and clear for about 2 days and then it got bad. I continued for about a month and discovered the breakouts continued badly. I now use Grandpas Pine Tar soap to cleanse (best I've used for breakouts) and emu oil for moisturizer.

I'm eighteen, and I've had bad acne for all of my life; constant zits around my mouth, on my chin and forehead, and lots of blackheads on my nose, and my skin type was really frustrating; oily and greasy, yet dry all the time. Wash your face with water as hot as you can stand it for a while, or try steaming it, then slap some of the Lady Soma "Antioxidant Berry Masque"; it's incredible.

It will dry on your skin; then wash it off. If you have red irritating pimples, you'll notice a change overnight; and if you use it every night, your skin will rock. The cool thing is, this stuff also shrinks and minimizes the little pock marks that zits leave in your face; I used to have them really bad under my eyes, they're almost non-existant now.
