Guide to Buying Emu Oil
Buying emu oil? If you're using emu oil for the first time, you're probably wondering how to choose the best kind for you and your family.
When I first learned about the health benefits of emu oil, I found it hard to find information on how to buy emu oil and what to look for. Fortunately, the internet has made it easier to learn more about this great skin oil.
Since then, I've been using emu oil for a number of years and have tried a variety of different brands from a number of emu oil ranches and manufacturers. I don't consider myself
an expert, but can pass on what I've learned to help you choose the best emu oil.
I think the best emu oil is:
- 100% pure & refined.
- Free of contaminants, bacteria, and other unwanted substances.
- Comes from an organic farm that raises organic emu, free of antibiotics, hormones and steroids.
Emu Oil FAQ
- What is AEA (American Emu Association) Certified Emu Oil?
- This is a 100% purely refined emu oil that hasn't been diluted or mixed with other oils.
- It has been tested by an AOCS (American Oil Chemist Society) certified chemist. The oil has been certified to meet very strict specifications. A sample is held in storage from each batch and can be pulled for testing if its purity is questioned.
- Only 100% Pure Emu Oil that's gone through this evaluation process can carry the AEA Certification Seal.
- What is Molecular-Distilled emu oil?
- Oil is made by a special distillation process that removes impurities not removed by traditional refining methods including unwanted moisture, undesirable free fatty acids and bacteria.
- Molecular distillation takes fully-refined emu oil one step further in the purification process.
- Manufacturers using this method claim it's the purest and highest quality emu oil available.
- When buying emu oil you can choose between Fully-Refined emu oil and Molecular-distilled emu oil.
- Is there a difference between white emu oil and yellow emu oil?
- When you buy emu oil, you may find there's a difference in the color of the oil. These color differences may be caused by the diet of the emu and different oil processing techniques.
- Research shows there's no difference in quality between different colors of emu oils.
- Is Australian emu oil better than North American emu oil?
- In 2004, the AEA compared emu oil from 9 different countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and United States. All samples were equally tested and the fatty acid content was analyzed. They found no difference between oils, regardless of which country it came from.
- The University of Massachusetts compared the anti-inflammatory properties between Australian Emu oil and American Emu oil and they found no significant differences.
- How much should you pay for the best emu oil?
- You can buy emu oil in different quantities.
- The most common size available is 1 - 2 ounce bottles, but you can also get these giant one liter jugs.
- The average costs of emu oil are $5 - $10 per ounce.
- Buying emu oil in 'bulk' quantities will usually save you money and you'll pay less per ounce. The prices also depend on the manufacturer and the purity of the oil.

I bought this 16 oz. bottle of emu oil from an
AEA-certified emu ranch in Kansas called
4 Star Emu Ranch. I found them through eBay.
I paid just under $40 a bottle, which works out to less than $2.50 an ounce. I think this is a pretty good price as you can find emu oils at $5 - 10 an ounce. You also have to factor in
the cost of shipping if you're ordering from the internet or mail order.
I've been using this emu oil for the past two years and I'm really happy with it. It's molecular-distilled and certified by the AEA.
This oil goes on really smooth and absorbs rapidly into the skin. You can get a variety of different sizes to suit your needs.

More Emu Oil Buying Tips:
- When you buy emu oil, try to use AEA-certified or Molecular-Distilled emu oils. I think these are the best emu oils to buy since there is some quality control involved in the processing. Not all emu oils are processed the same so use your own judgment when buying emu oil. The industry is self-regulated so it still comes
down to doing some research on the product you're interested in using.
- Buying emu oil in larger quantities is more cost effective than buying smaller 1 or 2 ounce bottles.
- There is no difference in yellow or white emu oils.
- Feel free to shop the world! Studies show there's no differences in quality of emu oils made in Australia or North America.
I hope you enjoy your emu oil! This healthy oil is one of the best natural skin care products you'll ever use. I love using it and I'm sure you'll appreciate its health benefits once you see what it can do for you.
